The Blossoming of AFCA-BC

There are many rules of three, and according to one, it takes three practice before one masters an art or a skill. In AFCA-BC’s case, its 3rd Annual Professional Development Seminar sees the blossoming of its organization as the executive council and professional development committee members put together a workshop that showcases the spirit of teamwork and cooperation on Sept. 18, 2010.

The workshop held at Cheers Restaurant was attended by approximately 70 attendees comprising of accounting professionals, small business owners and entrepreneurs. This is not bad for a young organization barely three years old.

A delegation from FAACPA (Filipino American Association of Certified Public Accountants) led by Vance Noriega travelled over 200 kilometers to attend the workshop. They had to be up by 5 in the morning in order to arrive on time.

PD chairpersons Mel Cruz and Benilda Eugenio masterfully assembled a powerful team of speakers comprised of senior Canada Revenue Agency’s team leaders who spoke on income tax issues and the use of electronic E-filing at four separate morning sessions. Dennis Bonifacio, Philip Kerr, Gregory Russell and Sarah Chang are passionate speakers and the audience couldn’t get enough of the speakers.

After a hot buffet lunch of salmon, roast beef, chicken and an array of salad, and cakes, it is time to switch off the left brain for the afternoon right-brain sessions. Angela Crocker, author of “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to creating a Social Network” by Penguin Press USA, spoke on how business professionals could incorporate social media into their way of doing business.

Edwina Invento, AFCA-BC social director can be credited for bringing in Pat Parungao, a business education teacher, teacher-librarian, Power of Attorney and an Executrix who spoke on Wills and Executorship. This is another topic that was well received by the participants.

Angelo Siglos, AFCA-BC’s photographer and publicity director worked with Sherrie Turychin of Luxury Travel Consultants to bring in a WOW presentation of Philippines as a travel destination. Sherrie Turychin artfully put together a slide show featuring the highlights of Philippines’ 7,100 islands along with a sound track of Filipino music from Filipino artists. This proved to be a great dessert offering after a full day of information.

At lunch, the participants burst into singing Happy Birthday as a surprise birthday cake arrived to greet a US participant, Bert Golla. Everyone agrees that the workshop definitely has a different kind of flavour. According to AFCA-BC’s president Shirley Shannon, the organization is earning a new reputation as the Association of Fun and Friendly Canadian Accountants of British Columbia.

AFCA-BC – the little engine that could!

An organization in its infancy, AFCA-BC (Association of Filipino Canadian Accountants BC Chapter) put on a very impressive show on Oct 17, 2009 for its Second Annual Professional Development Workshop with a turn out of over 50 accountants and student … read more
