Island Getaways in BC – Bowen Island

Island Getaway in BC – Bowen Island lies only 20 minutes away by ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver.  It has a population of only a little over 3,500 people.  This little island is within easy reach of most Vancouverites.  There are no planes to catch, no trains to take.  Just a short ferry ride which itself is a very enjoyable and scenic one.   The breathtaking views of the high peak mountains makes the ferry ride feel even shorter.  For those in a hurry, water taxis are also readily available.

Surprisingly, very few Vancouverites have visited Bowen Island, or even know about it, and yet it is so easy to get there.  There are plenty of things to do.  Camping,  hiking, biking, kayaking, strolling down the beaches, visiting art galleries, shopping at the small boutiques, and even dining.

Whether it is a short weekend getaway, a corporate retreat, wedding, family reunion, or a romantic rendezvous, Bowen Island is definitely recommended as a destination.   It is so picturesque, such that  many TV and movies have been filmed in Bowen Island.

“Lots of movies and TV episodes have been shot on Bowen Island over the years. Some notable films include 1986’s The Clan of the Cave Bear (Darryl Hannah), 1990’s The Russia House (Sean Connery, Michelle Pfeiffer), 1999’s Double Jeopardy (Tommy Lee Jones, Ashley Judd), and 2006’s The Wicker Man (Nicholas Cage, Ellen Burstyn). The 13-episode TV horror series Harper’s Island, which aired on CBS and Global in 2009, was also a Bowen Island production.”

What to Expect:
There are charming bed and breakfast places as well as airbnb short term rentals.  I have travelled to Bowen Island several times every year, and every trip never disappoint.  Whenever I have out of town guests, a Bowen Island getaway is alway on the itinerary.

There are several small coffee shops and boutique clothing stores that ladies love.  The merchandise are usually one of a kind, or made by local artisans or artists.  It should also be noted that Bowen Island is a dog-friendly place, your little pooch will enjoy running around at the park.

To sailors cruising from Vancouver to Alaska, Bowen Island is definitely a stop along the way.   For more information about Bowen Island, click here.
