Watercolor Art Exhibit at Silk Purse Art Gallery

silk-purse-art-galleryThe Silk Purse Art Gallery houses the West Vancouver Arts Council and holds regular art exhibits showcasing artworks by local artists.  This month from June 16th to the 28th, it hosts a watercolor exhibit titled “Landscape, Clear and Radiant”.      Landscape art depicts scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and forests. Sky is almost always included in the view, and weather usually is an element of the composition. Four  local Canadian watercolour artists; Enda Bardell, Vicki Canada, Peggy Shannon, and Carole Wilson each brought 10 of their works contributing to a total of 40 landscape collection.

The watercolor paintings on display include scenes from Saltspring Island, Lonsdale Quay,  Jasper Park, Mosquito Creek, Shuswap Lake, Iceland, English Bay…. mountains, beaches, trees, rivers, forests, highrise, container ships, log cabins……

Prices range from $175 Canadian dollars up to $500 - all framed and matted.    Judging from what has sold, it appears that the viewing public seem to favour the paintings that depicted man-made structures.   Paintings of the Saltspring Island Pier and the Lonsdale Quay Pier were the first to go.

Here are some of the exhibits:

This painting is titled
“Fishermen’s Houses in Iceland”

by local Canadian artist
Peggy Shannon

from a scene in Iceland
during her 66-day 2007 cruise from Arctic to Antartic
on the Hurtigruten cruiseship.

Here is another favourite
titled “Lonsdale Quay”

I’d rename it “Lonsdale Quay of my youth”
since the scene is rapidly changing with new highrises that will replace some of the old structures. This painting is also by Peggy Shannon.
